To become a teacher can be one of the most rewarding things you do in life. It gives you the opportunity to shape and mould the young people of the world, and watch them flourish into confident, capable, unique individuals. Being at the forefront of this transition can be tremendously fulfilling, but it does not come with out its own set of challenges.
To become a teacher is to take on a huge responsibility and commitment, to do the best you can do to help nourish your pupils and teach them and guide them to reach their full potential. You will no doubt have many different personalities in your class, and it is up to you to recognize this, so that you may use their individual personalities to bring out the best in them. It is a wonderful feeling when you can look back on the year and recognize how far your students have come, and feel proud of the influence you have had on their self development.
When you decide to become a teacher you need to not only have the commitment to the job, but more importantly you need to commit to the children. This is not a job which has set working hours. Sure, the time you have with the children may be set, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done on the ‘off hours’. These may include going to staff meetings, attending various work shops and keeping up to date with the latest policies and procedures. You also need to remember that you will be responsible for all the preparation work you do for your class, as well as marking and filling in report cards.
When you take on the role of being a teacher, actual teaching will only be a part of your job description. You will also need to do all the preparation work for your class. These need to be in accordance to the policies and procedures which the governments sets, and also meet the criteria requirements of the specific school you are teaching at. As a teacher you take on the responsibility of all the children you are teaching. This means that if you suspect any issues or disturbances within the child’s home environment, it is your task to report these to people of higher authority. This would normally be the head teacher or the principal. If these people find that further investigation is warranted, they will contact the local authorities, and the welfare system which will open up an investigation. This can be a very difficult job as a teacher, where you will need to make some hard decisions. It is vital that you are aware of this before you decide to become a teacher.
When you start your journey on becoming a teacher, you will be taught every aspect of the teaching environment. This will depend on the age range of the children you would like to teach. You will cover aspects of the child’s development, literacy skills, numeracy skills and various other areas. You will also be taught how to deal with the difficult situations of suspected abuse, and other areas which may cause concern. A part of your course work will be based on preparation techniques, and how to effectively prepare for your lessons.
The College or university which you choose is vitally important. There are many aspects of a career that involve teaching. You may want to teach children from birth till 9, or maybe you would like to focus on primary school goers, or maybe you have a desire to work with secondary school pupils. There is also the option to work with young adults, and even the specific area of working with children with special needs. Do you want to be an assistant teacher, or do you want to have sole charge of the children in your care. It is important to know what you would like to achieve and what sector of the education department you would like to teach in.
When you have decided which path you would like to take it is a good idea to go to the open days of the higher education institutes and meet the staff members and even talk to other students. This will give you a better idea of the learning environment which the college or university offers. Ensure that the course you choose covers detailed aspects of becoming a teacher. There are many roles that a teacher can perform, and many age groups and specialties which you may want to pursue. It is crucial to make sure that the course you decide on gives you the qualification which you will need to do the job you want to do.
