Culture and Education

Kathryn Goldman used to work in Rockwell High School, Minnesota, as a mathematics teacher, and is now a personal tutor of Mathematics and Applied Sciences. She has a teaching experience of 12 years.

“How did I become a teacher?” I always laugh when I think about it. I never had the slightest idea that I will grow up to teach students. And yet, now it seems like the noblest of all professions. “Do all the teachers enter into this profession by chance”, I asked a fellow teacher, who told me that she came into teaching by her own will. She wanted to be a teacher from childhood. I didn’t take up teaching as my first choice, but I must admit, I loved going to the classroom and seeing children from different cultures. I prefer teaching a class composed of diverse ethnicities, rather than a single dominant one. It gives me more to learn.

Learning is an ever-evolving process. A person never stops learning. As a teacher, I learn a lot from my students. I have even come across some students who are more gifted than me. They would help me solve difficult math problems. But it is not only about academics, you get to learn about their cultures too. With single ethnicity students in your classroom, you cannot learn about various societies. With a class composed of students from different places and backgrounds, you get to learn so much!

Present day education system might be seen as more of mechanistic, with the required affection and love missing from it. If you do not bond with the students, you cannot be a good teacher. It becomes important at the time of philosophical, cultural and social changes, that you envisage the education-culture relation. Culture and education are interdependent. Cultures are kept up and renovated via the technique by which they are passed on.

Cultures are largely influenced by media, and the process of learning. They don’t have clear cut boundaries, and differentiating between societies of ‘knowledge’, ‘learning’, ‘media’, and ‘amusement’ is not really important unless you understand the civilization entirely.

If you want to impart cultural knowledge to students, it is very important to learn about civilization as a whole. Without that, your knowledge will not be complete. Keep learning, and keep teaching. The more you teach, the more you learn- and whatever you learn, make sure to impart it to your students.
